"Academies for Excellence"

"Academies for Excellence" are 21st Century Community Learning Centers funded by
the New Mexico Public Education Department
This program is a partnership with the Albuquerque Public Schools, several community
agencies and five schools, Carlos Rey, Duranes, and Lavaland Elementaries and Truman,
Jimmy Carter Middle Schools.
Each after school program varies from site to site based on the needs of the students
and community. Students will participate in activities which include literacy development
activities, arts & crafts, dance, woodworking, cooking, band, and music.
Families are offered ESL, GED and parent education programs through The National
Hispanic Child and Family Development Institute. NHCFDI, Education Support Division,
provides on-going staff development training and monitoring of all sites.
The ultimate goal of the "Academies for Excellence" is to extend learning opportunities
which will benefit students and communities in the areas of education, health, social
service, cultural, and the recreational needs.
