State Pre-K

Funded by the New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD), YDI offers a high quality preschool program for four-year old children in selected areas of Bernalillo, Rio Arriba, and Taos Counties. Children are served in half day (morning or afternoon) classes. There is no income requirement for this program. Children must be four-years old and be attending kindergarten the following year.

YDI’s Pre-K program is modeled after the Head Start Performance Standards, which include the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework which addresses knowledge, skills, and behaviors that are important for all children when they enter kindergarten. Comprehensive services include a multicultural educational program that is tailored to children’s individual needs, fosters their self-esteem, and develops cognitive, language, motor, and social skills; medical and dental screenings and follow-up treatment, along with classroom lessons that emphasize a variety of preventative health practices; nutritious meals and snacks eaten in family style settings; evaluation, diagnosis, and special services, in a nurturing mainstreamed classroom environment for children with special needs; and regular field trips where children can enjoy and explore the world around them.

There are ongoing opportunities for parent involvement in the classroom and activities for them to do with their children at home. Parent training opportunities include Child Development Associate (CDA) training and a variety of parenting workshops offered throughout the year. Staff and families develop a partnership agreement that identifies family strengths and goals and they work together to assist family members to achieve their goals.
