The New Mexico Public Education Department has approved two tests, the GED and HiSET tests, for High School Equivalency (HSE) credentials in New Mexico. Therefore, the credential is now referred to as an ‘NM High School Equivalency certificate’ rather than a ‘GED.’ YDI does not prep for GED attainment.
High School Equivalency Diploma
If you dropped out of high school or are considering dropping out, there are other ways to earn credentials that are considered equal to a high school diploma. A High School Equivalency Diploma (HSE) is one option that you might consider as an alternative to a GED or traditional high school diploma. The HSE is a good option for students who haven’t had the chance to earn a traditional high school diploma. Most employers and colleges accept it as a substitute for a high school diploma, which can provide you with more opportunities in your career and education.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an HSE, GED, and HiSET?
HSE (High School Equivalency) is the diploma itself. The GED and HiSET are the two different tests you can take to earn that official New Mexico HSE credential. While “GED” is a common term, both are accepted equally across the state.
What is the difference between GED and HiSET testing?
The main difference is the test structure:
-
The GED has four tests: Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA), Math, Science, and Social Studies.
-
The HiSET has five tests: Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
Is GED or HiSET easier?
The HiSET can feel more approachable for some students because it splits the reading and writing into two separate, shorter tests. However, both are the same difficulty level and lead to the same valued credential.
How long will it take to get my diploma?
Your progress depends on your commitment. Dedicated students (10+ hours/week) can finish in a month, while most students (5-9 hours/week) take 3-6 months. Consistent attendance is crucial for success in our program. Anything below 4 hours a week means little to no progress will be made, and could result in being dropped from the program.
Do you offer accommodations for students?
Yes. We provide comprehensive support, including:
-
Testing Accommodations: We help secure official accommodations for students with disabilities or other challenges.
-
In-Class Support: Quiet study spaces, snacks, and one-on-one help with educational and career goals are available.
Ask our staff for further details and to request specific accommodations during your intake process.
Can I complete the program online only?
We use a hybrid model for the best results. While you get access to our online learning platform (Essential Education) for studying at home, we require a minimum of 4 hours of in-person attendance each week. This in-person guidance is essential for student success.
